New Year, New Trends! Top Interior Design Trends for 2025

Kiana Richardson

The holidays are officially over, and we've finally made it through the seemingly endless first month of the new year; I mean, seriously, I can't be the only one who thought January was just going to keep on going...

Now that the dust has settled a bit, we can shift our focus to all the excitement 2025 holds for the interior design world with regard to trends. It's clear interior design trends are shifting to embrace sustainability, comfort, and creativity above all else. This year, our living spaces will reflect a deeper connection with nature and the latest technology but also will foster an environment for deeper connection with one another. Let’s get into it and deep dive into some of the top interior design trends that will inspire us and transform our homes this year!

1. Sustainable Materials

Sustainability is leading the charge in 2025's design landscape. Designers are increasingly opting for eco-friendly materials to minimize environmental impacts and minimize waste. For example, reclaimed wood can reduce deforestation, while bamboo grows rapidly and can be harvested sustainably. If you're a statistics-buff, stats reveal that using reclaimed wood can cut carbon footprints by up to 80% compared to typical materials. Designers and clients alike who hold sustainability near and dear consider the full cycle of the product and, while you may spend more upfront, you'll enjoy a greater deal of longevity from your products when opting for a sustainable option. Be prepared to see more aluminum, natural paint and flax wood this year, along with products and furniture - yes, furniture - made from the unexpected, like recycled plastic bottles, seaweed, glass, and even paper composites...

Moreover, organic textiles like linen and hemp are gaining traction for their minimal environmental impact. These materials not only tell compelling stories but also contribute to healthier indoor air quality, enhancing the overall feel of your home.

2. Biophilic Design

Focusing on creating indoor environments that bring the outdoors inside, biophilic design is here to stay in 2025. Aside from being a great way to connect your interior space with the landscape surrounding it, it's no secret that incorporating elements of nature can reduce stress by up to 30%, enhancing overall mental health and well-being. You’ll find more homes adorned with indoor plants, living walls, and large windows that maximize natural light.

Natural materials like stone and wood will also play a critical role. A water feature, such as a small indoor fountain, can add tranquility, making your home feel more like a retreat.

3. Cozy and Comfortable Spaces

Say goodbye to stark minimalism, as 2025 ushers in the cozy chic trend. This trend emphasizes plush designs that invite relaxation. Furniture continues to evolve, focusing heavily on soft curves/edges with curved sofas and oversized chairs becoming staples. For instance, think of a deep, sectional sofa surrounded by soft throws and a plethora of cushions—a perfect spot to unwind after a hectic day and the ultimate invitation for others to join you.

Don't be surprised to potentially see a hint of the 70's return this year either, as low seating is something we can expect to see more of in design compositions. Inspired by the conversation pit, or sunken living room/lounge feel, furniture - especially dining room furniture - may sit a little lower and be surrounded by comfortable armchairs versus your typical dining room chair. All with a focus on social gathering and making your guests want to stay a while, there will certainly be some interesting seating options around the table featured in designs this year.

To further enhance the comforting atmosphere, warm color palettes, including soft browns, muted greens, and gentle creams are going to dominate the color world this year. As a bonus, these colors can improve mood, making our spaces not only cozy but uplifting too.

4. Multipurpose Spaces

The rise of remote work is prompting a demand for multipurpose spaces that maximize functionality. Designers are now crafting spaces that serve various roles, such as a bedroom that can transform into an office. Innovative furniture designs, like foldable desks, storage ottomans, and murphy beds that double as a desk allow for effective use of every square foot.

Adapting spaces to meet different needs lets families maintain order while embracing flexibility, making it easier to transition from work mode to relaxation mode, and we're sure to see plenty of this in the weeks ahead.

5. Bold Colors and Patterns

While Pantone's Mocha Mousse was announced the 2025 color of the year, we can expect to be pleasantly inundated with bold statement colors and patterns. Shades of red - from rich burgundies, deep reds to peachy pinks even, and terracotta hues - are going to be commonplace this year. Additionally, homeowners will embrace rich jewel tones like sapphire blue, forest green, and ruby red. These colors can invigorate living spaces, allowing individuals to showcase their personality in their homes in a big way.

Expect to see a resurgence of eye-catching wallpaper with intricate designs along with the dynamic flair that comes with the incorporation of bold patterns into accents, such as cushions or rugs.

6. Smart Home Technology

With an app for virtually everything around us, incorporating technology into home design has become essential. The seamless integration of smart home technology is rising, offering convenience while also promoting energy efficiency. Automated lighting and climate control can save homeowners anywhere between 15% to 30% on energy costs, per the Department of Energy.

Smart security systems and voice-controlled devices not only enhance safety and convenience but also enrich our daily lives, making our homes more functional all without compromising style. We're sure to see more sleek designs composed of hidden speakers, wireless charging furniture options and, yes, even voice-controlled lighting.

7. Artisan and Handcrafted Designs

As more and more people seek authenticity, artisan and handcrafted goods will take center stage in 2025. These unique pieces allow homeowners to personalize their spaces in a meaningful way. Expect to see bespoke furniture, handmade ceramics, and artisanal textiles that add depth, dimension and personality to interiors. You might even see an unexpected blend of materials, like this beautiful, crocheted side table with metal framing designed by Marcel Wanders:

Incorporating handmade items supports local artisans and creates a curated environment that reflects the individuality of the homeowner, contrasting sharply with mass-produced items.

8. Vintage and Retro Influences

Nostalgia is heavily influencing design trends this year, as vintage and retro styles resurface. Think classic furniture that is reimagined with a modern flair. A vintage coffee table combined with contemporary art can create a stylish yet familiar atmosphere lending a sense of timelessness to the overall design.

This blend of old and new brings a unique charm, grounding designs in warmth and character that new items often lack.

Embracing the Trends

As we dive into 2025's exciting interior design trends, remember that every choice we make for our spaces should highlight our well-being and reflect our personal styles. Whether through sustainable materials, cozy designs, or smart technology, this year invites us to be bold and creative in our decorating decisions.

Take inspiration from these trends and think about how you can incorporate them into your home. Whether you create a cozy reading nook or fill your space with plants, the possibilities are endless.
